"Giant of Mont'e Prama"
Oil on canvas, 80 cm x 100 cm.
Happy and honored that my work "Gigante di Mont'e Prama" has been selected in the Nuragic / Contemporary Art competition promoted by Virtual visit srls. A challenge has been launched to Sardinian artists: to create in 45 days an unpublished work inspired by the sculptural complex of the Giants of Mont'e Prama. 12 works have been selected that will travel to Europe to make this important archaeological discovery known internationally and to promote Sardinian contemporary art. Plovdid first stop in Bulgaria, European capital of culture together with Matera. All references to the following links:
Critical review
The work is a faithful hyper-realistic reproduction of the head of a Giant from Mont'e Prama. The almost photographic rendering of the head, which stands out clearly against a completely black background, enhances its technical and symbolic characteristics: the eyebrow arch that juts out onto large eyes consisting of two concentric circles, a massive nose and an evanescent mouth, constitute an artistic unicum that knows few equals in the history of sculpture.
The absence of a body to attach to the head and a context in which to circumscribe it make the facies of the statue indecipherable and suggestive. It is no longer a prehistoric warrior to hold up a shield and look at us with the eye of the soldier, but it is the wise man who guides and shapes a people, the craftsman who embellishes the future with art masterpieces, the priestess who weaves the history, the loved one who shares joys and sorrows and who plants roots for generations to come. In the giant's hyperrealism it becomes possible to see the past and future of a people who enriches the world with its own tradition.
