On Friday 3 May at 6.00 p.m., the spaces of the Arborense Diocesan Museum in Oristano will host a round table with the participation of the artist Tiziana Sanna who will present the solo exhibition Tiliguerta, the nature photographer Giovanni Paulis representing the WWF, Gabriele Pinna and Francesco Guillot for the LIPU, G. Andrea de Lucia and Andrea Camedda for the CReS – Sinis Recovery Center, Elisa Mocci representing the Regional Network for the Conservation of Marine Fauna.
The meeting, moderated by journalist Simona Scioni, will be an extraordinary journey into the world of Sardinian wildlife to discover the most fascinating and perhaps lesser-known endemisms of the region, the result of millennia of biogeographical isolation of the island, the typical and endangered species of the island, and initiatives aimed at protecting and safeguarding the island's ecosystem.
The artist Tiziana Sanna will present Tiliguerta, the collection of paintings dedicated to the endemic Sardinian fauna, curated by Alessandra Menesini and on display until June 2 in the spaces of the Arborense Diocesan Museum in Oristano. This collection is the result of a long research work on the typical and endemic Sardinian fauna species: the artist will lead the visitor on a wonderful journey into nature, in the woods of Sardinia, to meet these wonderful creatures. The Tiliguerta exhibition debuted in 2020 at the Temporary Storing of the Bartoli Felter Foundation in Cagliari, in 2023 it was exhibited at Cagliari airport in the spaces of the Cagliari Airport Library and will become a traveling exhibition.
At the conference, Tiziana Sanna will present for the first time in Sardinia the painting Caretta caretta, exhibited in March at the Galata Museo del Mare in Genoa. For some time now, the artist, in contact with the CTRM – Laguna di Nora and CreS-Sinis Recovery Centres, has felt the desire to paint a specimen of Caretta caretta to convey a strong message on the need to reduce plastic consumption, not throw waste into the sea, and keep the oceans clean.
Giovanni Paulis, professional photographer and environmental hiking guide, will show the extraordinary images of the most significant species of the WWF Reserve of Monte Arcosu and will illustrate the activities and projects underway in the Oasis. The reserve is part of the vast Gutturu Mannu Regional Park and falls within the territory of Uta, Siliqua and Assemini. Three thousand seven hundred hectares of forest, characterized by the intense scent of the Mediterranean scrub: holm oak, cork oak, cistus, heather, mastic, myrtle, wild olive, strawberry tree, phillyrea, junipers, wild orchids and along the watercourses oleanders, willows and black alders. The area, after having been a private hunting reserve for a long time, impoverished by poachers, has flourished again with the acquisition by the WWF in 1985 and the establishment of the largest Italian oasis. Here lives the Sardinian deer, which during the twentieth century risked extinction: in 1985 there were only 80 animals in the area. The establishment of the oasis has allowed the progressive repopulation and currently over a thousand specimens of the largest mammal in Sardinia live in the reserve.
Lipu will present a short report on extinct bird species in Sardinia edited by Gabriele Pinna and Francesco Guillot, respectively Lipu delegate for the province of Oristano and Lipu regional coordinator for Sardinia. The intervention will show images of species considered extinct in Sardinia but which, in recent times, with targeted or natural protection actions, have successfully reproduced on our island. Protection actions that have seen Lipu as the protagonist of conservation actions of international value. The situation of some species, even if not exactly endemic, which now survive only in Sardinia, will also be mentioned.
Elisa Mocci will present the activities of the Regional Network for the Conservation of Marine Fauna.
The presentation by G. Andrea de Lucia and Andrea Camedda for CReS – Sinis Recovery Center will focus on aspects of biology and conservation of sea turtles as well as on the key role of the Regional Network of Sardinia for the protection of this species. In addition, the problem of plastic ingestion by C. caretta, recently promoted as an indicator for plastic pollution in the Mediterranean, it will also be discussed in the light of national and international projects such as INDICIT, REMEDIES and TURTLEBACK in which the CNR-IAS group of Oristano is engaged.
